About me

Umair Asim FRAS

Hi, I am an amateur astronomer from Lahore, Pakistan and living in Dubai presently.

I have an observatory at the rooftop of my home which i have been using since 2004.

I used to do visual observations usually with Negler eyepieces (my favourites) but that’s mostly in the past. I have though, thoroughly enjoyed my share of eyepiece observing with C14 and Neglers from the pristine sky at Thandiani back in the day when it used to be absolutely dark out there.

I started planetary imaging with Phillips ToU Pro camera, probably the first CCD webcam out there (yes i am that old).. then used ‘The Imaging Source Camera’ for quite a while and finally moved to ZWO cameras. ZWO 174 has been specially my favourite one for the Sun with Halpha telescope.

For some time i imaged pretty pictures of deep sky objects with SBIG ST9XE CCD camera. All my images were taken from a heavily light polluted skies of Lahore city. Although this camera ST9XE, NABG chip with 20 micron pixel (awesome for long focal length), is best suited for doing science than colored images.

I now use ZWO 183 mono and have started using Hyperstar at C14.. working perfect! Guiding is a breeze!

In Dubai, i have my own setup.. again. These days, testing out Alpy 600 with Celestron Edge HD 8.

Public outreach is an another great passion of mine.. it has been almost 30 years now.. I with my wonderful team and friends have shown celestial bodies to thousands of students and general public in and out of Lahore.. i will continue doing that. for the rest of my life.

Somewhere i also ended up having a Masters in Astronomy. I am in school education and run my own schools in Lahore.
